Start with a grow bed ratio of 1:1, that is 800 square feet of grow beds for an 800-gallon fish tank. as you add more fish, increase the grow bed square footage to as high as 4:1. an 800-gallon fish tank can support 3,200 square feet of grow beds.. From grow bed area, determine the fish weight required (pounds or kg) using the ratio rule 1 lb (.5 kg) of fish for every 1 sq ft (.1 sq m)of grow bed surface area, assuming the beds are at least 12″ (30 cm) deep.. A two, deep-media grow bed system can support about 40 pounds of fish with our current design of ample fish tank and grow bed aeration, and works out to about 3.3 gallons of bio-filter grow bed media (hydroton) per pound of fish..
What should be fish to water ratio in aquaponics? posted on august 30, 2017 at october 22, (more grow beds), it may be possible to decrease the water to fish ratio to lower gallons of water per pound of fish. with a decrease of bio-filter volume, this ratio must be increased.. And when you are talking about ratios you mean the amount of water that the fish tank will hold compared to the amount of water the grow bed will hold (displaced by the growing media). as opposed to how much liquid each empty container would hold.. And in terms of volume, you should ideally have a 1:1 ratio between your fish tank and grow bed area with 12” depth. this roughly translates to 1 square foot of grow bed for every 6 gallons of water..
